We first posted this info on swapping an M50 motor into an E30 chassis over 20 years ago. After our early experiences with the e28 mounts (which are not a really satisfactory solution), we decided to produce our own custom-made mounts, which incorporate the correct angle and stud location for the swap. You can find our #MM5030 or MM5030L 24V swap mounts, as well as other items custom-made for this swap, in our catalog.
In our original projects, we used the late e28 535 motor mounts, right and left. The pictures below show the correct installation of those motor mounts. We are not using the inside hole in the subframe; rather we mount to the outside to get the correct setting for the motor.
